As to the higher Chinese Officials, the Crown is unable to prove that either the Viceroy Tak or Li Ka Cheuk (the Commander of the Canton City Guard) knew before the murder that Yeung Kui Wan was in Hongkong. But it cannot be doubt- ed, in view of the evidence as to the rewards given nearly a month afterwards to the members of Li Kwai Fan's gang, that then at any rate these officials were fully cognisant of the circums-

tances of the crime.

There is also some evidence to implicate

Li Chi Tin (Li Ka Cheuk's Secretary), Ko Ping Shan (one of Li Ka Cheuk's braves), and Tsui Fux (another of Li Ka Cheux's braves and

believed to have been a member of Li Kwai Fan's gang), but not

enough at present I think to warrant proceedings against them.
